BLUE MOON ALERT: IT’S HAPPENING TONIGHT ACROSS THE UK!

Hello lovely people, and welcome to one of those nights we say happens once in a blue moon — and guess what? It literally is! 🤣
Right here, right now, 31 May 2026, our skies are graced with the Blue Moon, and here at Nemetona, we’re absolutely buzzing about it.
Let’s dive into all the fun facts, weird and wonderful folklore, and exactly what this means for your magic, your vibes, and your evening plans! ✨
📜 FIRST: THE FACTS (AND A LITTLE LIE)
First thing’s first; it won’t actually be blue. 😅 Sorry to burst any bubbles, but unless there’s a massive volcanic eruption or forest fire filling the air with dust, it’ll look just like every other full moon: big, bright, silvery, and absolutely stunning. So why the name?
This is the second full moon in a single calendar month (we already had one back on 1 May the Flower Moon, perfect for all that spring growth magic!). Since months usually only get one full moon, having two is rare roughly every 2 to 3 years hence the saying “once in a blue moon” meaning something that hardly ever happens.
And here’s an extra fun twist: this one’s also a Micromoon, meaning it’s at its furthest point from Earth, so it’ll look slightly smaller and more delicate… like the moon decided to put on its elegant evening gown and keep it subtle. 💫
It reaches its absolute peak at 08:45 this morning, but it will look perfectly full and glorious from dusk tonight right through until dawn, rising around 10:04pm over the UK so grab your coats, grab your friends, grab your crystals, and get outside if you can!

Now for the good stuff what did our ancestors think, and what does it mean for our craft?
📜 WHY “BLUE”? THE BETRAYER MOON
Way back in Old English, this moon was sometimes called the Belewe Moon which meant “betrayer moon” because it arrived earlier than expected and messed up the usual rhythm of the seasons and festivals. It was like the moon decided to skip the queue and turn up unannounced! 😆
Over time, “belewe” turned into “blue”, and the name stuck. But far from being bad news, pagans and wise folk quickly realised this “extra” moon was actually a gift a bonus, a free pass, a little bit of extra magic thrown in just because.
🕯️ GODDESS ENERGY: THE CRONE’S MOON
In our traditions, every moon has its face, and the Blue Moon belongs most strongly to the Crone the wise, ancient, all-knowing aspect of the Triple Goddess.
She’s the one who holds the secrets, the lessons, the endings and the new beginnings. She’s the one who says “It’s okay to let go. It’s okay to change. It’s okay to be wise, to be powerful, and to be exactly who you are.” 🦉
This is her night so expect deep truths, sudden clarity, and answers to questions you didn’t even know you were asking!
⚡ MAGICK ON STEROIDS
If a regular full moon is like turning the volume up to 10, the Blue Moon cranks it right up to 11… or 12… or 100! 📈 All magic done tonight is said to be doubly powerful, extra potent, and far more likely to stick. It’s the perfect time for:
✅ Release work — let go of old habits, hurts, or patterns that have been hanging around too long
✅ Big manifestations — dreams, goals, wishes you thought were “too big” or “too hard”
✅ Divination & intuition — the veil is thinner than usual; you’ll hear, see, and feel things more clearly
✅ Deep healing — for things you’ve been working on for ages
✅ Moon water making — seriously, bottle this light! It’ll be your most powerful water of the whole year 🌊
🐺 FUN OLD TALES
• Folklore said that if you walked three times around a hill or stone circle under a Blue Moon, you’d meet a spirit or see your future. (Just don’t get lost, okay? 🤣)
• Farmers knew this was the time to plant things that needed extra strength or protection.
• It was said that wishes made tonight would come true… but only if you really meant it. No half-hearted requests here!
✨ HOW TO WORK WITH IT (NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED!)
You don’t need fancy tools or complicated rituals. Here’s what we’ll be doing at Nemetona, and what we recommend:
🌙 Step outside (even just for 5 minutes!) breathe in the night air, say hello to the moon, and thank her for her light and her extra magic.
✍️ Write it down what do you want to let go of? What do you want to grow? Write it on paper, burn it safely, or bury it in the earth.
🔮 Charge your treasures crystals, jewellery, candles, anything you use in your practice. Leave them out tonight to soak up that Blue Moon glow.
💧 Make Blue Moon water fill a clean jar with water, leave it out overnight, and use it all year for blessings, cleansing, and magic.
And most importantly… enjoy it! It’s rare, it’s special, and it’s ours.

Tonight is proof that magic doesn’t always follow the rules. Sometimes it shows up early, sometimes it’s “extra”, sometimes it’s small and delicate but packed with power. That’s exactly what the Blue Moon teaches us: the most wonderful things in life are often the unexpected ones.
